Giles of Rome, Archbishop of Bourges, France, and prior general of the Augustinian Order during its formative years, was a theologian at the University of Paris. One of his major writings was a commentary on the biblical book the Song of Songs. Many writers during the medieval ages commented on this book. Giles of Rome presents “a striking contrast to the style of lectio divina that characterized the patristic and early medieval works (introduction). His study of the book focuses on the view that “The principal aim of this work is to express the mutual desire felt by bridegroom and bride, or by Christ and the Church. A selection of treatises and sermons by Giles of Rome is also included.
